Today’s Lesson: Life on Earth! You are not alone...

We say that there is life on earth and so there is. We question is there life on other planets? Not sure what the odds are in Las Vegas, but considering the utter, incomprehensible vastness of not just our "known" universe but the possibility that our entire known universe operates on plane and that conceivably there are many more "planes of existence" that could be operating with a slight degree of offset from our own. This conception is called multiverse. When something, even an idea grows so large as to rip the fabric of our belief system, we have to admit, we are discomforted.

But let's take a quick look in the opposite direction. Let's focus just on earth and examine, "Life on Earth."

It's not that there is "life on earth" but there is an overwhelming abundance of life on earth. Five thousand years ago, human population is estimated to be about 5,000,000. On the cosmic clock, we are about 2 seconds into existence.

But are humans the only form of life?

In 2011, scientists estimated there were 8.7 million species of animals on earth. Humans count for one species! Rats are said to be equal in population to humans, so there are 7,000,000,000 rats on our planet. Paris has 4 rats to every human. In New York City, it's 4 humans to every rat. There are 2.2 million species in the ocean. 6.5 million species on land. We are not alone.

Scientist estimate that it will take another 1,000 years just to catalog known species.

Life on earth? It's teeming...

Quick Takeaways:
The seven characteristics of life include: responsiveness to the environment; growth and change; ability to reproduce; have a metabolism and breathe; maintain homeostasis; being made of cells; passing traits onto offspring.

  • Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.”  Rumi.

Hope this helps.
